To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original Guild Wars, developer ArenaNet has announced a substantial visual and gameplay refresh titled Guild Wars Reforged. Co-developed by ArenaNet and 2weeks—a studio comprised of former ArenaNet creatives—this modernized edition is designed to update the 2005 MMORPG and its expansions for contemporary hardware and audiences.
Guild Wars Reforged features a comprehensive HD overhaul that enhances in-game visuals, performance, and the user interface. Key additions include proper controller support via X-Input and full optimization for the Steam Deck. The update addresses long-standing technical hurdles, such as user interface scaling issues on high-resolution 4K displays and specific crash bugs identified during last April's anniversary event.
The pricing structure is designed to be accessible: the complete package will cost $20 for newcomers, while existing owners of the game will receive the Reforged content as a free update, including upgrades to expansions. Game director Stephen Clarke-Wilson described the project as "toughening up" the game, noting that despite its age, the title has maintained 100% uptime for new players for over six years.
Brandon Dillon, CEO of 2weeks, explained that development began in early 2025. He praised ArenaNet's engineering culture for maintaining the code base in excellent condition, which allowed the team to implement modern features like controller support and accessibility options efficiently. "It's not a remaster, but we've really focused on modernizing the experience... ensuring that Reforged worked seamlessly with the modern system while maintaining the core aesthetic and beauty of the original game," Dillon stated.
