Gabrielle Zevin's novel Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow has rapidly achieved the status of a modern classic since its debut. The novel has now joined the ranks of The Folio Society's lavish illustrated editions. With this new edition now available for purchase, a preview of artist Manshen Lo's illustrations has been unveiled.
Originally published in 2022, the novel holds particular relevance for gaming enthusiasts, centering on two childhood friends who become aspiring game designers. The story follows Sam Masur and Sadie Green, who reunite during their college years to launch a legendary collaboration. Spanning thirty years from Cambridge, Massachusetts to Venice Beach, California, the narrative explores identity, disability, failure, and the redemptive power of play, examining what it means to connect and love through the lens of a creative partnership.
The new edition features an exclusive introduction by Zevin, offering insight into her personal gaming background and the inspirations behind the novel. In an excerpt, Zevin recalls her childhood fascination with Sierra On-Line games like King’s Quest and Gold Rush!. She describes how the history of Sierra, founded by husband-and-wife team Ken and Roberta Williams, influenced her writing. "Although Ken and Roberta Williams are not Sam and Sadie, their stories have similar elements: art, tech, commerce, collaboration, marriage, video games, and California," Zevin wrote.
Zevin further noted that the history of modern video games is largely contained within her own lifetime, providing the perfect structure for a "Künstlerroman"—a coming-of-age story of artists—paralleled by the coming-of-age of the industry itself. The Folio Society edition is currently available for order and is priced at £65.00 / US $90.
