Samsung Unveils the World’s First 1,040Hz and 6K Glasses-Free 3D Gaming Monitors Ahead of CES

Samsung has unveiled a lineup of ambitious new PC gaming monitors ahead of CES in January, headlined by a 32-inch 6K display with glasses-free 3D support and a separate model capable of hitting a staggering 1,040 Hz refresh rate.

Samsung Odyssey 3D gaming monitor

The most eye-catching of the bunch is the Samsung Odyssey 3D G9 G90XH, a 32-inch monitor boasting a native resolution of 6,144 x 3,456 pixels. That places it alongside other 6K displays on the market, but Samsung’s panel stands out by pushing a native 165 Hz refresh rate at full resolution.

For those prioritizing speed, the Odyssey 3D also offers an alternate 330 Hz mode running at 3K resolution. Because this is an integer scale of 6K, image quality in this high-refresh mode could remain impressively sharp.

Unlike Samsung’s traditional reliance on VA panels, the Odyssey 3D uses an IPS panel with a quoted 1 ms gray-to-gray response time. It also incorporates eye-tracking-powered, glasses-free 3D technology—an ambitious feature that raises questions about potential trade-offs in standard 2D image quality.

For users uninterested in glasses-free 3D, Samsung has also announced the Odyssey G8 G80HS. This model shares the same 6K resolution and dual refresh modes—165 Hz at 6K and 330 Hz at 3K—but removes the 3D functionality entirely.

Speed enthusiasts, however, may be more interested in the Samsung Odyssey G6 G60H. This 27-inch display runs at 1440p with a native 600 Hz refresh rate, and features an alternate “HD” mode that pushes refresh rates all the way up to 1,040 Hz.

Samsung’s specifications are slightly ambiguous, but the HD mode likely refers to 720p, allowing proper integer scaling on the 1440p panel. The trade-off, of course, is a significant drop in image clarity in exchange for unprecedented motion smoothness.

Like the 6K models, the Odyssey G6 also uses an IPS panel. In fact, all of Samsung’s newly announced LCD gaming monitors ahead of CES rely on IPS technology, signaling a possible shift away from the VA panels long associated with the brand.

This change may be influenced by Samsung’s gradual exit from in-house LCD manufacturing in favor of QD-OLED production. As a result, these IPS panels are likely sourced externally, with LG Display being the most probable supplier.

Samsung also confirmed one new QD-OLED gaming monitor, the Odyssey OLED G8 G80SH. This 32-inch 4K display runs at 240 Hz and carries DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification, with full-screen brightness rated at 300 nits—suggesting the use of Samsung’s latest QD-OLED panel technology.

Pricing for all of these monitors remains unannounced, but Samsung is expected to reveal more details during CES. Given the specifications on offer, these displays are likely to target the premium end of the gaming monitor market.
