This Pokémon Meets Fall Guys Game Was Rescued After Wizards of the Coast Canceled It

In February 2023, Wizards of the Coast shut down an internal game development studio, a move that resulted in the cancellation of multiple unannounced projects. One of those titles was Whimpact!, an online multiplayer game pitched as a blend of creature collecting and chaotic obstacle-based competition.

Rather than let the project fade away, then–VP of creative Leah Hoyer took a different path. Hoyer founded a new studio, Level Headed Games, acquired the rights to Whimpact!, and resumed development independently. The game is now preparing to launch in early access on PC.

Whimpact! is set in a colorful world inhabited by Whims—small, magical creatures that grant powers to players who collect and care for them. The more attention a Whim receives, the stronger its abilities become, encouraging players to actively manage and rotate their companions during matches.

Up to eight players can team up in cooperative, arena-style gameplay. Matches revolve around collecting Whims, harvesting a mystical resource known as Starcane, and navigating environmental hazards while fending off waves of robotic enemies attempting to steal that energy.

The game features seven distinct Whim types, each available in six color variants. A Whim’s color determines the power it provides, with abilities ranging from increased speed and strength to higher or longer jumps. Players can mix and match these abilities freely, even swapping Whims mid-match to adapt to changing situations.

Customization is a significant component of the experience. Both player characters and Whims can be outfitted with cosmetic items such as clothing, weapon skins, and accessories. Players can also personalize a dedicated home base known as a Home Tile, which acts as a hub between matches.
