Horizon Franchise Was Created With Multiplayer In Mind, Says Guerrilla Games Boss

Starting with Horizon Zero Dawn and later Horizon Forbidden West, the PlayStation series has followed protagonist Aloy through single-player adventures. With the recent reveal of Horizon Steel Frontiers, the series is shifting toward an MMO format. Guerrilla Games studio director Jan-Bart van Beek, however, says multiplayer was part of the franchise’s original vision.
Lego Horizon Adventures was, van Beek suggests, the studio’s first small experiment with multiplayer. In a post on X, he wrote that from the start the team imagined Horizon as a multiplayer-capable universe. "LEGO Horizon Adventures was our first small step, with Steel Frontiers we're taking a bigger one. There is much more to come, and we're excited to show you what is coming," he added.

Notably, Horizon Steel Frontiers is announced for PC and mobile only so far—not PlayStation 5. That would be unusual for the franchise; even the VR spin-off Horizon Call of the Mountain released on PS VR2. Steel Frontiers appears inspired by cooperative monster-hunting games like Monster Hunter, promising large-scale raids. Meanwhile, Sony has sued Tencent over Light of Motiram, claiming the title is a "slavish clone" of Horizon.
Van Beek’s comments reinforce the idea that multiplayer is central to Horizon’s future. Reports also say Guerrilla’s next project could be another multiplayer Horizon title. Additionally, a live-action Horizon movie is in development, though no creatives or cast have been announced yet.
The franchise’s pivot toward social, cooperative play signals a broader expansion of the Horizon universe. While the core single-player experience remains beloved, Guerrilla is clearly exploring how Horizon’s machine-hunting and world-building can translate into shared play across platforms.
