The Witcher 3 Almost Left Out This Important Romance Feature

For many players, one of the most memorable choices in The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt is deciding whether Geralt ends up with Yennefer of Vengerberg or Triss Merigold. But according to CD Projekt Red, that choice wasn’t always part of the plan.

CD Projekt Red co-CEO Adam Badowski revealed to PC Gamer that the option to romance Triss was added surprisingly late in development. Initially, the narrative team focused almost entirely on Geralt and Yennefer’s bond. But removing Triss from Geralt’s romantic arc created a missing emotional weight.

“[The romance with Triss] wasn’t [there] from the beginning,” Badowski said. “But at some point we understood that this lack of conflict, personal conflict… There was a lack of something. This decision was made pretty late, but it was great. It was a great decision.”

Because the games take place after Andrzej Sapkowski’s original novels, CDPR had freedom in shaping Geralt’s relationships. Yennefer and Ciri didn’t appear until The Witcher 3, while Triss had a major role in the first two games and served as a key romance option. Without the choice to pursue Triss again, the studio felt it would miss an opportunity to continue a fan-favorite storyline.

The Witcher 3 recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, but CD Projekt Red still plans to release one final patch—adding mod support to console versions for the first time. Meanwhile, the studio is developing The Witcher 4 and a full remake of the original Witcher, both powered by Unreal Engine 5. A recent tech demo offered an early glimpse of the next-gen visuals fans can expect.
