Valve has officially revealed its upcoming lineup of gaming hardware, including Steam Frame — a new VR headset designed to run both virtual reality and traditional games with ease.
As reported by The Verge, Valve plans to encourage Android developers to bring their apps directly to Steam. To support that push, the company is preparing a Steam Frame developer kit aimed at creators already familiar with building Android APKs for mobile VR devices.
“From the user’s perspective, our preference is that they don’t even have to think about it,” said Valve engineer Jeremy Selan. “Developers can bring over mobile VR titles using the APKs they already make, publish them on Steam, and they’ll just work on this device.”
This compatibility comes from Steam Frame’s Arm-based Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, which allows Android apps and VR experiences to run natively on the headset. That means Steam Frame owners will have immediate access to a wide range of mobile VR titles on top of the Steam library.
Alongside the Steam Frame headset, Valve announced a new Steam Machine designed to bring PC gaming to the living room, as well as a revised Steam Controller. Pricing for the new lineup has not yet been revealed. However, Valve hardware engineer Yazan Aldehayyat told IGN that the Steam Machine will be positioned as an affordable console alternative.
“If you’re trying to make a PC with similar performance and features, the Steam Machine will be very competitive and offer strong value,” Aldehayyat said.
