Ubisoft Unveils Generative AI Game Demo Titled Teammates

During a recent investor presentation, Ubisoft revealed Teammates, a new research-focused game experience built around generative AI. The project was positioned as a major step in how games may be developed and experienced in the future.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot described generative AI as a transformative shift for the industry, comparing its long-term impact to the transition from 2D to fully 3D games. According to Guillemot, Ubisoft views AI not as a background tool, but as a core technology that can meaningfully change player interaction and internal development workflows.

Teammates is being developed by the same internal team responsible for Neo NPC. Ubisoft says the prototype exists to demonstrate how AI-driven gameplay could create more dynamic, responsive, and interactive game worlds rather than scripted experiences.

The prototype is currently being tested by a small group of players. While Teammates is structured as a first-person shooter, its defining feature is the ability for players to interact with non-playable characters using natural voice commands. These NPCs are designed to respond in real time, adapting their behavior based on player input rather than following fixed dialogue trees.

Narrative director Virginie Mosser explained that the goal is not to replace storytelling with automation, but to give AI narrative structure and emotional weight. The team aims to preserve creativity and unpredictability while ensuring that the technology enhances, rather than overrides, human-driven storytelling.

One of the game’s standout concepts is a companion character named Jaspar. Unlike traditional companion NPCs, Jaspar is designed to communicate directly with the player, offering situational advice, reacting to spoken instructions, and assisting with problem-solving in a more natural way.

Ubisoft also emphasized that Teammates runs on a custom-built API with built-in guardrails. These safeguards are intended to limit AI hallucinations and keep the system focused on supporting player creativity instead of generating uncontrolled or immersion-breaking responses.

Internally, Ubisoft views Teammates as both a playable prototype and a technical testbed. The knowledge gained from this experiment is expected to influence future projects, particularly as the company prepares to introduce its upcoming “Creative Houses” operating model.

While Ubisoft has recently faced criticism over its use of AI-generated content, the company maintains that projects like Teammates are focused on responsible experimentation. The studio has stated that AI tools will be refined to better serve players, developers, and creative integrity moving forward.
