Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has landed, and one of the loudest early debates is over the game's revised aim-assist. Treyarch tweaked rotational aim-assist after the beta to balance controller and mouse-and-keyboard play — and opinions are sharply divided.
Some players say the changes make close-range fights fairer, while others feel they removed too much assistance from controllers.
In a developer blog post, Treyarch said the goal was to "create a more balanced and competitive experience for all players, regardless of input choice" while also preserving the "core feel of Call of Duty controller gameplay." The studio said beta data showed controllers had a slight advantage in close quarters, while keyboard-and-mouse players were stronger at long range.
Treyarch specifically adjusted the strength and activation requirements for rotational aim-assist at short and long ranges based on feedback and telemetry. The studio added it will continue to collect data and player feedback to inform future changes.
What players are saying
Reactions on social media vary. Pro player Shotzzy posted that he feels like he "has no aim-assist" in the launch build, while other users labeled the changes the "dumbest decision" they've seen. Conversely, some community members say dialing aim-assist down highlights pure skill and has improved their experience.
As usual, the debate is loud: clips and complaint threads circulate alongside posts praising the decision. Expect heated discussion to continue as more players log hours and more data becomes available.
"We look forward to hearing your feedback on these changes, and we will be gathering more data to continue our push for a level and competitive playing field in Black Ops 7." — Treyarch
Will Treyarch revert or tweak aim-assist?
Black Ops 7 is a live game and Treyarch can make balance updates based on community response and internal metrics. The studio has signaled openness to adjusting values if the data supports changes.
The game is available on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, and is playable via Xbox Game Pass. For help getting up to speed, check out GameSpot's campaign review and multiplayer tips linked in the gallery below.
