“The Mandalorian Has Changed His Priorities”: Director Jon Favreau Offers First Glimpse of the Hero’s Future with the New Republic

The Mandalorian and Grogu will show a noticeably changed version of its helmeted hero, according to director Jon Favreau, reflecting the character’s growth across three seasons of the Disney+ series.

Din Djarin’s big-screen debut continues his story after the events of the third season finale of The Mandalorian, which saw the former bounty hunter step away from his constant work to embrace a quieter life caring for Grogu.

By this point in the timeline, Djarin has become more than just a fan-favorite character. His actions have caught the attention of the New Republic, and he now finds himself interacting with key figures from across the Star Wars universe, including Zeb Orrelios from Star Wars Rebels.

Favreau teased that this evolution is central to the upcoming film’s narrative direction. Djarin’s priorities have shifted away from simply taking contracts and toward actively working for causes he believes are right.

“The Mandalorian has changed his priorities,” Favreau explained. “One of the last things we say in season three is that he doesn’t want to just be a hired gun anymore. He wants to work for the good guys.”

This desire to do good in the galaxy leads Djarin to cross paths with new characters, including Colonel Ward, portrayed by Sigourney Weaver, and to embark on missions alongside Zeb Orrelios. Favreau described Zeb as a particularly exciting addition, noting that his presence works even for viewers unfamiliar with the animated series.

Djarin’s continued development also fits neatly into Disney’s broader plans for the New Republic era of Star Wars storytelling. That timeline will continue on television with a second season of Ahsoka, while fans continue to speculate about a future crossover film that could unite multiple storylines.

Before any large-scale crossover occurs, however, The Mandalorian and Grogu must establish itself as a standalone theatrical experience. It will also be the first Star Wars film released in seven years, following 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.

Despite the larger scope, Favreau emphasized that the emotional heart of the story remains unchanged. The relationship between Djarin and Grogu continues to anchor the narrative.

That bond, Favreau said, reflects what Star Wars has always been about: growth, mentorship, and the passing of knowledge from one generation to the next. As the pair face new challenges together, their journey will continue to evolve over the course of the film.
