Recent updates: As of 11:00 pm ET, Steam appears to have stabilized, with store and community features operating normally. That said, services were fluctuating throughout the day, so it remains possible that further disruptions could occur. For now, however, Steam is back online.

The situation is not as positive for the Epic Games Store, which continues to report major outages affecting login and matchmaking services. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney addressed the issue on social media, apologizing for the disruption and stating that “the servers are melting down.”
Other online gaming services have also experienced issues. Reports indicate that Xbox Live and EA’s online platforms are facing problems as well, suggesting a broader disruption across the gaming ecosystem. For both players and IT teams, it’s shaping up to be a difficult night.
We’ll continue monitoring the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available. In the meantime, players can track the live status of major gaming platforms through third-party monitoring services such as Unofficial Steam Status, Epic Games’ official status page, and DownDetector.
Original story: On the day before Christmas, many players found themselves unable to access Steam at all. Shortly before 2:00 pm ET, Steam appeared to go completely offline, and the outage did not resemble routine maintenance.

The Unofficial Steam Status site reported websocket errors and indicated that the Steam store, community features, and web API were all down. At the same time, traffic on SteamStat surged, a common sign that users were checking to confirm widespread service issues.
DownDetector also showed a sharp spike in reports beginning shortly after 1:00 pm ET, reinforcing the scale of the outage. While Steam has since begun recovering, the timing of the disruption—just ahead of Christmas—made it particularly frustrating for players hoping to spend the day gaming.
