A brand-new promotional poster for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has debuted, and fans are immediately drawing comparisons to Super Mario Odyssey. What was first expected to be a purely galaxy-focused adventure now appears to be blending in more elements from across Mario’s 3D history, and this latest poster only pushes that idea further.
The artwork showcases Mario and Luigi standing within a desert environment that longtime fans will instantly recognize as Odyssey’s Sand Kingdom. The image includes several unmistakable landmarks: the looming Inverted Pyramid suspended above the dunes, the colorful structures of Tostarena, and the lively Día-de-los-Muertos-inspired Tostarenans populating the scene. Even the warm lighting and reddish sand echo the exact tone of the original kingdom.
This isn’t the first time Sand Kingdom imagery has appeared in promotional material. Earlier this week, the newest trailer offered a quick sequence showing the brothers racing through the desert on motorcycles, leaping over dunes while wearing the same outfits seen in the poster. As they soared upward, the camera revealed the Inverted Pyramid nestled in a massive valley—a shot that seems to match the poster’s perspective closely.
Initially, fans assumed this was just one location among many in a fast-paced montage that would take Mario and Luigi across different parts of the galaxy. However, dedicating an entire poster to this single kingdom suggests the film may give it more narrative importance than expected. This raises fresh questions: will the movie highlight additional Odyssey locations? Are more kingdoms returning? And could characters like Cappy or other major Odyssey NPCs make appearances?
Of course, the Mario movies have never strictly adapted any one game’s storyline. The Super Mario Bros. Movie borrowed elements from numerous titles—everything from 3D Mario platformers to Mario Kart and even classic NES references. The sequel seems poised to follow a similar approach. We already know Bowser Jr. plays a central role, carrying his iconic Super Mario Sunshine paintbrush as a key plot device. Some trailer shots even hint that he may be using abilities inspired by Super Mario Bros. Wonder, blending multiple eras of Mario lore into a single cinematic universe.
Alongside world-building teases, the latest trailer also confirmed two major cast additions. Brie Larson has officially joined the voice lineup as Rosalina, bringing one of the galaxy’s most important characters to the big screen for the first time. Meanwhile, actor and filmmaker Benny Safdie will portray Bowser Jr., setting the stage for a new dynamic between the Koopa royal family and the Mario brothers.
Despite all the reveals, one notable character remains mysteriously absent: Yoshi. While hints and silhouettes have appeared in promotional art, no full shot of the dinosaur hero has been shown yet, leaving fans eager for a reveal as the movie nears release.
With its blend of nostalgic references, bold reinterpretations, and nods to multiple Mario titles, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is shaping up to be an even more ambitious follow-up to the original blockbuster. Whether the Odyssey connection turns out to be a brief cameo or a major story component, it’s clear Nintendo and Illumination are weaving together a much broader Mario universe.
The film is scheduled to hit U.S. theaters on April 3, 2026, with more promotional material expected in the coming months.
