Sony has officially announced Horizon Steel Frontiers, a new entry in the Horizon franchise designed specifically for mobile devices and PC, developed in partnership with Guild Wars creator NCSoft. This MMORPG leans heavily into a Monster Hunter–style formula, but with Horizon’s trademark mechanical beasts taking center stage. The PC version will be accessible through NCSoft’s Purple launcher.
Created alongside Guerrilla Games, Horizon Steel Frontiers transports players to the Deadlands, where they take on the role of a Machine Hunter. Players can customize their characters, join large-scale raids, and master a more intricate combat system to gather materials and survive. At this time, the game has no release date and notably isn’t planned for PS5 or PS4—making it the first Horizon title to skip PlayStation consoles entirely.
The reveal comes shortly after Sony filed a lawsuit against Chinese tech giant Tencent over Light of Motiram, a game the company argues is a “slavish clone” of Horizon.
Since debuting in 2017, the Horizon series has steadily expanded through major releases, DLC, and spin-offs like Horizon: Call of the Mountain and Lego Horizon Adventures. Guerrilla confirmed in 2023 that it is actively developing “Aloy’s next adventure,” and rumors suggest another multiplayer-focused Horizon project is also in production—one expected to feature a distinct art style compared to the mainline series.
Outside of gaming, a live-action Horizon movie remains in the works, with filming projected to begin in 2026.
